Training great principals to lead great schools
At New Leaders, Benjamin Fenton (AB 1996, MBA 2000) directs strategy for the only national organization focused on developing exceptional school leaders for high-need district and charter schools. Between 2000 and 2013, the organization trained more than 1,000 leaders, having a transformational impact on more than 300,000 students in schools nationwide.
The idea for New Leaders was developed by Fenton and a group of other Harvard students in 2000 as an approach to an impending shortage of school principals. Their concept was a finalist in HBS’s annual Business Plan Contest, the first nonprofit submission to earn such recognition. Following the contest, New Leaders received philanthropic funding support and formally began operating.
The New Leaders Aspiring Principals Program includes a yearlong leadership residency and intensive coursework, as well as a full year of support once a candidate has been hired as a principal. Students in New Leader schools consistently achieve at higher levels than their peers, have higher high school graduation rates, and are making progress in closing the achievement gap. In recent years, the nonprofit has expanded its programs to provide leadership training for teachers and principal supervisors, and additional training to support principals already on the job.
