Extending goodwill to all in the global community
As a person who is blind, Jim Gibbons (MBA 1994) is no stranger to workforce challenges. In his role as president and CEO of Goodwill Industries International, he leads initiatives that improve lives, benefit communities, and help the environment.
In 2012, Goodwill served nearly seven million people and placed more than 215,000 people in jobs, many of whom participated in the organization’s career-training programs. When Gibbons visits Goodwill centers, the advice he gives to the people they serve is simple: “Keep hope alive, develop skills, and never give up.”
The former head of National Industries for the Blind and the first blind person to graduate from HBS, Gibbons strongly believes in applying business skills to pressing societal problems. “By using the tools already at their disposal,” he says, "corporate leaders can ensure that social entrepreneurship is not a passing trend, but rather a movement that will make a difference on a large scale.”
