Ideas in Practice

Building Businesses in Turbulent Times An economic crisis is a charter for business leaders to rewrite and rethink how they do business, says Professor Lynda M. Applegate in this Working Knowledge article. The key: Don't think retrenchment; think growth.

Raise the Educational Bar On FT.com, Lecturer Stacey Childress and Professor David Thomas advocate for voluntary national academic standards. Under the "No Child Left Behind" Act, each state is free to define what students must learn to graduate from high school. Because the law carries harsh penalties if targets are not met, "states had incentives to forgo more rigorous standards in favour of ones districts were more likely to meet," say Childress and Thomas.

The Future of Management Education Concluding the HBR Debate, Dean Jay Light discusses new challenges and opportunities for business schools. At HBS, Light says, "We will need to adapt to meet new economic realities and the wide-ranging ambitions of our students. But we should also recognize that the core of our teaching here at HBS will be more important than ever before....We will continue to do research that is close to practice to get to the heart of what caused the crisis. And we will recommit ourselves to teaching the principles of sound judgment, values and ethics, and leadership."
