A Metaphor for Success in Marketing Why do advertising campaigns and new products often fail? Why do consumers feel that companies don't understand their needs? In his new book, Marketing Metaphoria, Professor Emeritus Gerald Zaltman says the problem is that marketers themselves don't think deeply about consumers' innermost thoughts and feelings. Read an excerpt from the book in Working Knowledge and find out why Zaltman says some of the world's most successful companies have leveraged "deep metaphors" to solve their marketing problems.

HBS Working Knowledge is an online forum that offers a first look at new thinking from HBS faculty. Browse stories by topic, industry, or faculty at http://hbswk.hbs.edu.
