Faculty

In Defense of American Cars On Forbes.com, Assistant Professor Daniel Snow suggests that consumer perception of the U.S. auto industry lags behind reality. Having studied technological innovation and manufacturing at automakers in North America, Europe, and Asia, Snow writes: "I am convinced that five years ago the Big Three started producing vehicles that are among the best in the world."

Since Enron, Little Has Changed In a Wall Street Journal op-ed (subscription required), Professor Bill George and Professor Emeritus Malcolm Salter draw lessons for improving corporate governance from Enron and the current crisis. In their view, it is imperative that boards "provide clear oversight of executive compensation and risk-taking" as protection against future failures.

HBS Working Knowledge provides an advance look at the work of the faculty. Articles are available by topic, industry, or faculty at http://hbswk.hbs.edu. This week, Working Knowledge presents new research by Professor Zeynep Ton. In "Thinking Twice About Supply-Chain Layoffs," Ton observes that cutting the wrong employees can be counterproductive for retailers. One suggestion she proposes: pay attention to staff who handle mundane tasks such as stocking and labeling. Your customers do.
