Consumer Financial Services, November 2–7, 2008 The Consumer Financial Services program is for senior managers of organizations that mass-market financial services to consumers, including banks and credit unions, insurance companies, credit-card companies, financing arms of consumer products firms, marketers of mutual funds and other investment products, providers of payment and credit services, and nonprofits focusing on consumer financial services. Program participants analyze consumer financial services such as credit, payments, asset management, insurance, and advice from a fresh, functional angle with an emphasis on learning from innovative enterprises and business models. New this week: How Disruptive Innovation Changes Education HBS professor Clayton M. Christensen, who developed the theory of disruptive innovation, joins colleagues Michael B. Horn and Curtis W. Johnson to advocate for ways in which ideas around innovation can spur much-needed improvements in public education. A Q&A with the authors of Disrupting Class: How Disruptive Innovation Will Change the Way the World Learns.
 

Thinking about joining a family business? Senior Lecturer John Davis advises it's best to wait until you know more about yourself and your long-term goals. "Plus, you'll bring more to the business by first getting outside work experience." Davis is faculty chair of the HBS family business program.

Beware Warehouse Shopping. In this year of skyrocketing food and energy prices, warehouse shopping is more attractive to consumers than ever. But deals cause many to overspend. Assistant Professor Michael Norton co-wrote a study that found "shoppers associate membership fees with savings." His advice? "Enter with tunnel vision."
