What's New at Harvard Business School. 100 Years: 1908-2008.

April 2008

The Centennial Celebration Begins

Happy 100th Birthday HBS! More than 3,000 students, faculty, and staff came together on April 8 to celebrate the Centennial anniversary of Harvard Business School. The daylong series of festivities and special events—which included remarks from HBS Dean Jay Light and Harvard University President Drew Faust and a portfolio of student organized panels—featured a campus-wide case discussion on the future of the School.

The Conversation: Marketing and Democracy Has marketing made for wiser voters and better leaders or has it simply made money the determinant of electoral success? Are markets more democratic than political institutions? Read the responses of your fellow alumni and join the conversation on Marketing and Democracy with Professor John Quelch and Research Associate Katherine Jocz.

Celebrate the Centennial with Your Local HBS Club HBS alumni clubs throughout the world are hosting Centennial events and celebrations that feature HBS faculty sharing their latest research. Events in May include Professor Regina Herzlinger speaking on consumer-driven solutions to the crisis in healthcare at the HBS Club of Michigan.

JetBlue's Flight Plan Low cost carrier JetBlue seemed impervious to the problems affecting most major airlines. It had seen rapid growth since its founding in 1999 and frequently topped customer satisfaction surveys. Then came Valentine's Day, 2007. Bad weather and an operational breakdown trapped thousands of fliers on the runway at New York's JFK airport. So how did JetBlue learn from its mistakes and make things right with customers? Read this Working Knowledge discussion with Professor Robert S. Huckman to find out.

Is the Financial System too Complex? Today's financial crisis is often blamed on a system that got too complex for even its practitioners to understand. But has the complexity really made the financial system more risky? In this interview with Technology Review, Professor Robert Merton says the global financial system actually manages risk better—and with greater transparency—than ever before.
