Digital Photo Guidelines for Class Notes Correspondents

Digital photos are encouraged. Along with your Class Notes, digital photos may now be submitted electronically via the Web.

Format, Size, and Resolution:
A horizontally oriented image should be 1375 pixels wide. A vertically oriented image should be 650 pixels wide. TIFF and JPEG are the preferred formats. The Bulletin prints photos at a resolution of 300 dpi. You may submit a photo at 300 dpi or the web standard, 72 dpi (or at a resolution in between), provided the pixel width conforms to the 1375 and 650 standard.

How big does 1375 pixels wide at 72 dpi look on your computer screen when viewed at 100%? View a sample.

Digital Cameras:
To achieve the resolution necessary for print a 2 megapixel camera or greater is necessary. Photos should be taken in the highest resolution mode, often called "fine."

Minimizing File Size:
Minimizing file size is important to facilitate upload. JPEG has the best quality to file size ratio. If your image is not a JPEG, try converting it.

Compression:
If after converting to JPEG, your files size is still larger than the eight megabytes limit for uploading, you will have to compress it. Acceptable compression software includes Stuffit for Macintosh, Winzip for PC or any self-extracting program. You may then e-mail the compressed file as an attachment (class_notes@hbs.edu).
