25th Reunion Peer-to-Peer Discussions
Acceptance 101: I Am Where I Am
Middle age is about accepting and appreciating what we have. Embracing the lives, families, careers, and futures that we have. So, how are we adapting to the realization that we are unlikely, at this point, to be the next CEO of GE or Goldman Sachs? What are the ambitions that we are still holding on to? What are the new goals that we are adopting? And does it all feel OK? Or even pretty good, come to think of it?Finding a Job at Age 50
Ironically, at a time in our lives when we have accumulated more skills, experience, and connections than we ever had before, it can be harder than it should be to find a new job. Making a horizontal move means that we're competing with people who have more industry experience, if not work experience. It becomes more and more likely that we would be reporting to somebody younger, or even much younger, than ourselves. These and other challenges are ones that many of us have been facing. By sharing war stories, we'll create some picture of what has worked for people.Keeping Friends in Your Life
Studies have shown that having friends in your life contributes as least as much to longevity as diet and exercise. But as the years pass, it becomes harder both to make and to stay close to friends. In college and grad school, we were with a cohort of people just like us. When we had young children, we found ourselves making friends at the elementary school and at the soccer field. But in our 50's, we have fewer opportunities to make new friends. So what are people like us doing to maintain and even deepen relationships with people who have been part of our lives all these years? Our (Aging) Bodies, Our (Aging) Selves
It's hard not to complain, at least a little, about how annoying aging is. The myriad little ways that our bodies put up fights that they didn't used to. The way that it takes longer to recover from activities and injuries. And as our bodies are showing signs of change, our self-images are too, even if the two are not always in sync. We'll compare notes on how people are handling this challenge that nobody ever warned us about.Parenting Now That the Children are Older
The work than some of us care most about is our work as parents. Now that our children are older, and in many cases no longer living at home, we face a different set of challenges. How do we help our children learn to be independent? Can we still keep them from making terrible mistakes? How do we make the transition to having adult-to-adult relationships with them? How do get them to spend time with us, even if it's not as much as we wish. The work of parenting is never really finished.Reinventing Ourselves at Midlife
Almost all of us have switched jobs since graduation. Some of us have changed careers by choice, others by circumstance. Big changes in our professional life. At the same time, many of us have made major changes in our personal lives, divorcing, or starting new families. Whatever the impetus, we are continually reinventing ourselves. As we approach the final third of our working lives, are we pursuing our careers instead of our dreams? Is it possible to do both? We'll discuss the emotional, financial, and logistical issues of reinventing our jobs, finding a new career, or even moving your life in a completely new direction.Spiritual Life in a Material Environment
We live well in the material world. All of us are constantly barraged by a multitude of messages from peers and advertisers about the next "must-have" item. What gives meaning to our lives? Do you struggle with spirituality, or are you confident in your religious and/or moral compass? Have our spiritual sensibilities evolved because we're wiser, or just older? Come explore with classmates the nuances of maintaining a spiritual life in a materialistic world.Trying to Make a Difference in the World
At this stage in our careers, many of us are focusing more of our attention on what we can do for the benefit of others. Sometimes this means spending more time on boards or working as a volunteer. For others it means changing jobs, maybe working in the non-profit sector or in government. And for others, it means looking forward to a time when we're more able to do things like these. What can we do to ensure that we are actually making a contribution and not just going through the motions? What are ways we can make sure that we are really doing something that we'll feel good about? The Women's Session: Charting our course in the second half of life
We've held a session for the women of the class of 1984 at each of our reunions with great feedback. The format is loose - Leah McIntosh and Syl Saller teeing up some thought provoking questions with the main focus being giving women a chance to share their thoughts and feelings. Men are welcome, but the focus is on a women's view of on the issues many of us face 25 years post HBS - redefining our careers from here, kids leaving home, getting older, marriage, divorce, changes in our identity. This is a time of significant transition for women, so the discussion promises to be especially rich. Please join us.Working for Yourself
Compared to twenty years ago, more of us are working for ourselves than ever before. Some people are consultants or authors, thrilled with their autonomy but daunted by the uncertainty. Others are running their own firms, flush with success but dogged by great responsibilities. In both cases, there aren't a lot of other people to talk to. Working for yourself can be a lonely business. How have others dealt with the business, financial, social, and emotional challenges of it? -
