Sankofa!
Sankofa, a word in the Akan language of Ghana, embodies the idea of learning from the past to build for the future — a fitting name for a student performance that draws its inspiration from the rich cultural traditions of the African Diaspora. Organized by the HBS African-American Student Union and held in November in Burden Auditorium, the show featured a variety of dance numbers, including this Ewe dance, Agbadza, from eastern Ghana. Kwami Williams of MIT, Stephanie Belcher (HBS ’11), Yaw Agyenim-Boateng (HBS ’10), and Tiera Brown (HBS ’10) were accompanied by the traditional Zulu song “Thina Simnqobile” (“We Have Overcome the Devil”), recorded by the Soweto Gospel Choir.
