Designing Care: Aligning the Nature and Management of Health Care

by Richard M.J. Bohmer
(Harvard Business Press)

In this book, Senior Lecturer Bohmer, a medical doctor, explains that health-care professionals provide two different types of care: sequential (the patient is diagnosed quickly and given predictable, reliable, low-cost care) and iterative (the patient’s condition is unknown; tremendous resources may be required for diagnosis and treatment, often with uncertain outcomes). To reduce costs and manage care effectively, the two types of care require different management systems. With stories and cases drawn from years in the field, Bohmer shows how to manage both modes successfully.
