Professor Barnes Remembered
Professor emeritus Louis (“By”) Barnes (MBA ’52, DBA ’58), an expert in organizational behavior and a pioneer in the teaching and study of family-owned business issues, died in August. He was 81. For more than forty years, Barnes taught in the MBA Program, the Doctoral Program, and all major Executive Education programs until his retirement from the active faculty in 1998. He also worked to improve classroom instruction at HBS and throughout Harvard. His HBS colleague, Senior Lecturer John Davis, recalled him as a “soft-spoken, gracious, and kind gentleman, eager to help his students and always generous with his time.”
HBS Faculty Teach in New Education Leadership Program
Faculty from HBS will teach in a new program announced by the Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE). In the fall of 2010, HGSE will launch a three-year, tuition-free course of study initially for 25 students resulting in a Doctorate in Education Leadership (Ed.L.D.). The program is designed to prepare men and women to lead school districts and non-profit, government, social enterprise, and philanthropic organizations that play key roles in the education landscape. Also participating will be faculty from the Harvard Kennedy School.
HBS Philanthropy Report Online
This year, the School’s annual donor report will be published online. The change from a print publication reflects a cost savings consistent with a School-wide effort to contain expenses, as well as a desire for environmentally sustainable communications. The new Report on Philanthropy will be available on the Alumni Web site (www.alumni.hbs.edu/giving/) and will require a LEFA log-in to view class results.
Japan Research Center Names New Executive Director
In August, Nobuo Sato (MBA ’82) assumed his duties as executive director of the Japan Research Center (JRC) in Tokyo. In addition, he managed a corporate governance practice group. Prior to Egon Zehnder, Sato worked for fifteen years in the Tokyo and London offices of the Industrial Bank of Japan, now part of the Mizuho Financial Group.

NYC Club Hosts Nonprofit Summit
More than 275 leaders from New York City’s most influential social service organizations gathered on September 23 for the second annual Social Enterprise Summit, hosted by the HBS Club of Greater New York.
The half-day event focused on strengthening social services in challenging times, a theme inspired by the increased demand for services provided by nonprofits, said club president Bruce Marcus (MBA ’80). Sonal Shah, director of the White House Office of Social Innovation and Civic Participation, delivered the keynote address.
