Exploring Vietnam and Cambodia

Twenty-eight alumni and guests explored natural wonders, vibrant cities, and historical sites of Vietnam and Cambodia last spring during a ten-day trip sponsored by the HBS Alumni Travel Program. Starting in Hanoi on April 19, we traveled to Ha Long Bay with its stunning seascape of more than 1,600 limestone islands. Shutterbugs in the group were hard-pressed to take bad shots. The sea kayaking wasn’t so shabby, either!
We journeyed next to Hue, the former capital of Vietnam, and then stopped for a couple of nights in beautiful Hoi An, a busy international seaport from the 15th through the late-19th centuries. From there, we headed to Cambodia’s capital, Phnom Penh, to take in the sites. The Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum provided chilling reminders of the country’s turbulent past under the Khmer Rouge. From Phnom Penh we flew to Siem Reap, the “base camp” for our two-day visit to Angkor.
One of the most important archaeological sites in Southeast Asia, the immense Angkor Archaeological Park houses the ruins from the Khmer Empire that flourished between the 9th and 15th centuries. The crown jewel, Angkor Wat, was the highlight of our trip.
