Last issue’s LAST LOOK: Readers Joe Kaminski (MBA ’71), John Rees (MBA ’72), Paul Restaino (MBA ’71), and Jim Stanton (MBA ’73) wrote to inform us that the dramatic scene depicted in December’s mystery photo took place in the Charles River near the Larz Anderson Bridge during the winter of 1970–1971. As Rees recalls it, “A dog had walked out on to the ice, and the ice gave way. ...The dog was howling/crying as it desperately swam to keep from being swept downstream beneath the ice.”
Enter passerby Jim Hawes (MBA ’71), our now-identified hero and canine-savior, a Vietnam vet and former Navy SEAL whose training had included cold-water swimming. The photo and stories about the rescue subsequently appeared in media around the world, generating praise, honors, and even some marriage proposals. Says Hawes, who now resides in Austin, Texas, and is involved in Asian joint ventures and investments, “More than thirty years later, I am still recognized not for my business ability but for the dog rescue. Oh well.”
