Stephen Fuller Remembered

Fuller

An authority on labor relations and organizational behavior, Stephen H. Fuller (IA ’43, MBA 2/’47, DCS ’58), the Jaime and Josefina Chua Tiampo Professor of Business Administration, Emeritus, died last January in Belmont, Massachusetts. He was 84.

Beginning in 1952, Fuller taught MBA and Executive Education courses ranging from organizational behavior and collective bargaining, to corporate responsibility and business policy.

An associate dean from 1963 to 1969, he helped strengthen the School’s financial resources, alumni services, and academic programs.

Interspersed with sojourns at Soldiers Field, he served for two years as the first president of the Asian Institute of Management in the Philippines and, from 1971 to 1982, as a vice president at General Motors, where he focused on employee relations and workplace issues. After retiring from HBS in 1985, he was chairman and CEO of World Book for seven years before returning to his alma mater, Ohio University, where he completed his teaching career.

Fuller, who received the School’s Distinguished Service Award in 1994, was praised by Professor Mal Salter, a former student of his and later a faculty colleague. “Steve was one of the great instructors of his era at HBS,” Salter noted. “His command of substance along with his ability to inform, intellectually provoke, and bring smiles and tears to the faces of his students almost simultaneously marked him as a truly masterful teacher. His generous spirit also marked him as a great teaching colleague. Steve made a difference everywhere he went.”

Gifts in Fuller’s memory may be made to the Belmont Hill School, 350 Prospect St., Belmont, Massachusetts 02478 or to Delta Tau Delta, Ohio University, Athens, Ohio 45701.

The MBA Oath Debate

After months of glowing press accounts, the MBA Oath, has hit a media rough patch. Critics now see little value and much potential harm in the well-meaning oath.
