Alumni Fill Diplomatic Posts
HBS alumni currently hold several key diplomatic posts in Europe. U.S. ambassadors to France, Germany, Italy, and Austria are, respectively, Craig Stapleton (MBA ’70), William Timken Jr. (MBA ’62), Ronald Spogli (MBA ’75), and designee Susan Rasinski McCaw (MBA ’88).
Sports in the Classroom
Football (both kinds) is a learning tool in HBS classrooms. Professor John Quelch has produced a paper case and video series on soccer powerhouse and blockbuster brand Real Madrid that features interviews with players and management as well as game footage. In addition, former New England Patriots COO Andy Wasynczuk (MBA ’83), whose front-office duties for the three-time Super Bowl champs included hammering out complex player contracts, is now an HBS senior lecturer teaching an advanced course in negotiations.
James Heads Executive Education
Ralph James (MBA ’82) rejoined HBS in September as the executive director of Executive Education. He served most recently as vice chairman of The First Marblehead Corporation, a Boston firm specializing in student loan services. Prior to this, James was associate dean and senior executive officer at HBS (1994–96) and also served in various administrative positions at the School (1982–94).
Chen Directs Asia-Pacific Center
Michael Shih-Ta Chen (MBA ’72) is the new executive director of the School’s Asia-Pacific Research Center in Hong Kong. A banker and economist who has spent his career in Asia, Chen most recently directed the risk-management unit of the Asian Development Bank in Manila.
Sterling Joins Healthcare Initiative
Cara Sterling has joined HBS as the founding director of the Healthcare Initiative, recently launched by former Dean Kim B. Clark and faculty chair Richard Hamermesh. The initiative seeks to create a community for students, faculty, and alumni who are interested in improving health and the health-care system. Sterling has an MBA and MPH from the University of California, Berkeley, and comes to HBS with extensive experience in the health-care industry.
Ghosh Is Entrepreneur in Residence
Shikhar Ghosh (MBA ’80) has been named the HBS entrepreneur in residence for 2005–06. A veteran of the technology sector, he was chosen by BusinessWeek and Forbes as one of the leading Internet and technology entrepreneurs. Ghosh will share his expertise with HBS faculty and students by collaborating on research efforts, sitting in on class discussions, and serving as a sounding board and mentor to students who seek his advice in launching their own businesses.
New Corporate Leader Program
Executive Education has created The Corporate Leader program to focus exclusively on the most important challenges facing the corporate office. Joseph L. Bower, the Donald Kirk David Professor of Business Administration, is the program’s faculty chair. Entrepreneurship Association Forms
The Arthur Rock Center for Entrepreneurship recently launched the HBS Entrepreneurial Alumni Association, chaired by three prominent entrepreneurs: Joy Covey (MBA/JD ’90), Charles Richard Reese (MBA ’74), and Dan Smith (MBA ’76). The association welcomes HBS alumni entrepreneurs and aspiring entrepreneurs as well as those in professions that support them. For details, visit www.hbseaa.org.
