Stevenson Accepts Key University Position

Howard H. Stevenson, senior associate dean for External Relations and a leader in the study of entrepreneurship at HBS, has been named senior associate provost for Planning and Resources for Harvard University, effective July 1.

In the newly created position, Stevenson will advise Harvard President Lawrence H. Summers, Provost Steven E. Hyman, and Vice President for Alumni Affairs and Development Donella M. Rapier (MBA ’92) on strategic planning for University fundraising, as well as its implementation.

“Howard has played a pivotal role both in translating academic priorities into fundraising goals and in securing many of the largest commitments to HBS in its current campaign,” said Summers. “He will now do that for us on a University-wide basis.” Stevenson was the chief architect of the School’s ongoing $500 million campaign, which continues through December 2005. Although he is stepping down from his External Relations role, Stevenson will remain a member of the HBS faculty.

“Getting to work with faculty colleagues across the University as we collectively envision and then shape Harvard’s future is what really attracted me to this new post,” said Stevenson. “Certainly, one of my great joys has been engaging alumni and friends of HBS. Having the opportunity to involve alumni in all facets of the University will surely be one of the best parts of this new assignment.”

HBS professor Malcolm S. Salter will become senior associate dean for External Relations, effective July 1. Salter has been a member of the faculty since 1967. His teaching and research focuses on corporate strategy, organization, and governance.
