Henry M. Paulson, Jr. (MBA ’70), chairman and CEO of Goldman Sachs, received the 2003 Business Statesman Award from the HBS Club of Greater New York at its annual International Dinner on May 29. The black-tie event brought together more than four hundred HBS alumni and other business leaders at the Waldorf-Astoria hotel.

In his speech, Paulson emphasized the need for corporations and Wall Street to participate in rebuilding trust in America’s businesses.

The evening’s other honoree was Donna E. Shalala, president of the University of Miami and secretary of health and human services during the Clinton administration. The club presented her with its 2003 Leadership Award.

Proceeds from the dinner are used to fund the club’s operations, scholarships, and community service efforts. Last year, the club gave $25,000 in financial aid to MBA students, provided a full scholarship to the Strategic Perspectives in Nonprofit Management executive program at HBS, and funded a summer fellowship for an HBS student to work at a nonprofit organization. The club’s community service programs provide pro bono consulting to nonprofits and small businesses affected by the World Trade Center tragedy.

The HBS Club of Dallas held its third annual Crimson Charity Gala on May 17 and raised over $30,000 for Dallas Reads, the leading adult literacy program in North Texas.

“The gala is a fun excuse to get dressed up, socialize with other alumni, and raise money for charity,” said Kristy Dooley (MBA ’99), chair of the 2003 Gala Committee. “It takes a lot of work to pull this off, but it’s definitely worth it,” she added.

More than 150 alumni and their guests enjoyed the festive evening, which included a silent auction of items donated by club members and sponsors.

“This is the second year that the gala has supported Dallas Reads,” said Marla McDonald (MBA ’91), acting liaison between the club and the charity. “We selected Dallas Reads because individually we all know the value of education, and as business leaders, we understand the impact of illiteracy on our community.”

Alumni support the organization as board members, volunteers, and literacy tutors. “We are very proud of how the club has evolved to serve an important role for both our members and the Dallas/Fort Worth community,” said Grant Swartzwelder (MBA ’90), president of the Dallas club.

Atlanta Club Gives Leadership Award

Frank J. Bellati, chairman and CEO of AFC Enterprises, one of the world’s premier franchisors of restaurants and specialty-foods concepts, has received the HBS Club of Atlanta 2003 Community Leadership Award.

Under Bellati’s leadership since 1992, AFC, parent company of Church’s Chicken, Popeyes Chicken & Biscuits, and Cinnabon, has doubled its number of restaurants, bakeries, and cafés to over four thousand.

Baseball great Hank Aaron, SVP of the Atlanta Braves, presented the award during the club’s Community Leadership Dinner on April 24 at the Biltmore in Atlanta. Aaron also was guest speaker.

The award is presented annually to an individual who has demonstrated outstanding leadership in the public or private sector and has made lasting contributions to the Atlanta community. The recipient need not be an HBS graduate.

The Leadership Dinner also raises funds for full scholarships for senior personnel of local nonprofit organizations to attend one of HBS’s Executive Education nonprofit management programs. This year, the club provided four such scholarships.
