Portraits from the Class of 2003

Last year when Tony Deifell (MBA ’02) posed this question — from a poem by Pulitzer Prize–winner Mary Oliver — to his sectionmates, he was impressed with what the answers told him. “I found that my classmates want to bring value to the world,” he says simply. So, with support from the School, he expanded upon his role as section cohistorian and asked the entire Class of 2002 to respond to the question. Deifell, a media artist and social documentarian, also made photographs to accompany his classmates’ answers. The resulting student Portrait Project has been displayed on campus and archived on the Web.

The project gained a loyal following, and this year Jean Hayden (MBA ’03) took the initiative to coordinate a similar project — with support from the MBA Career Services Office, the Bulletin, and Deifell — for her class. Hayden asked each section to nominate three members to participate in the project, and on two cold and rainy days in mid–April, she helped Deifell photograph thirty students. “I was really moved by the project last year,” explains Hayden. “I thought it would be wonderful to continue it.”

“Answering the question isn’t easy, but it really gets people to focus on their lives and their priorities,” says Deifell, who hopes such focus “will serve as a constant reminder of the big picture.” Excerpts from the responses of ten students, along with short biographical sketches, follow. The full text and photographs of all participants will be on display at Commencement and can be found at www.alumni.hbs.edu/2003portrait/.
