Dan Geffken (MBA '87)

Five years ago, Dan Geffken had every intention of attending his 10th Reunion — he was the organizer of his section's party. Days before the festivities were to begin, however, he and his wife, Brenda, received a phone call informing them that a baby girl had been born in Ohio and was ready for adoption. “It's easy for my classmates to keep track of how old Molly is,” laughed Geffken, SVP, finance, and CFO of Transkaryotic Therapies in Cambridge. “They can chart her age by our reunions.”

This year Geffken was treasurer for his 15th Reunion, in addition to hosting a section golf tournament and get-together. “I truly enjoy spending time with former classmates,” he said. “They're just very fun, interesting, bright people.” Geffken's HBS ties have offered personal support, too. When Brenda was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2000, Geffken participated in the Pan-Mass Challenge, a 192-mile bike ride that benefits the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Jimmy Fund. He raised some $71,000, much of it from fellow HBSers. Noted Geffken, “Brenda is doing great now. The whole family, including Molly, is delighted to be here.”
