Marilynn Davis (MBA '82)

Transition has been a recurring theme for Marilynn Davis, who has worked in financial, general management, or consulting positions in a variety of large and small companies, including American Express, General Motors, and Carver Federal Savings, the oldest African-American bank in the country. Her career has also included impressive stints in public service, as CFO of the New York City Housing Authority in the 1990s and as assistant secretary for administration at the Department of Housing and Urban Development during the first term of the Clinton administration. “Our class graduated from HBS in the middle of a recession, and we have seen a lot of changes,” noted Davis, who is now EVP and manager of the consumer banking segment at FleetBoston Financial Corporation. “We've spent our careers in a climate of heightened competitiveness, working within a changing legal and regulatory framework, and confronting the realities of globalization.”

In order to sharpen her focus on global business issues, Davis regularly attends the annual HBS Global Alumni Conferences, which also give her the opportunity to feed her passion for travel, the arts, and architecture, and sometimes to practice her fluent Spanish. “And of course,” Davis added, “it's always fun to see HBS friends and classmates.”
